Search Dog Training - Lives Depend On It

In the world of today, there are many searches being conduct for lost or injured people or perhaps a person wanted by law enforcement. Dogs are often called on to help the searchers find their target. Dogs which are trained to perform these searches are in high demand. Search dog training is important in preparing the canines for their duties.

There are many breeds of dogs through out the world. The natural abilities of certain breeds of dogs make them especially good dogs for searches. Border Collies, German Shepherds, Labradors, and Golden Retriever are among the best breeds that can be trained to search.

The dog that has completed a search dog training program will be working around people of the search party so it is essential that the canine is even tempered. The circumstances of the search can be very stressful for the manpower involved and than can translate to stress for the dog. During the search, there will be a different noises and distractions. It is important that the dog be able to work with focus under these conditions.

Some of the dogs are trained to follow the scent of a person which remains in the air. A human will leave behind microscopic air particles which remain suspended in the air and the dog can detect and follow them. A tracking search dog will follow the scent of a lost person or at large criminal which remains on the ground. The public is most familiar with this type of search dog.

There are other dogs which have specialized search dog training. Dogs can be trained to look for the body of possible drowning victims. A deceased body below the surface will give off gases as it decomposes. A dog trained for a water search can detect these gases and lead searchers to a more narrow area of search.

Other dogs have the ability to pick up the scent of cadavers who have been buried under soil. The life of a person who may be trapped under an avalanche may depend on a dog which is trained to find victims under the snow.

When a life is in the balance, mankind can turn to his best friend the dog to perform the search and aid in the rescue. The dog which has completed search dog training will prove itself to be a valuable asset. The rescue of a single human being will make the cost all the more worth while.
